University of Florence – UNIFI
The University of Florence is an important and influential centre for research and higher training in Italy, with 1800 lecturers and internal research staff, 1,600 technical and administrative staff, and over 1,600 research assistants and doctoral students.
The Department of Industrial Engineering (DIEF) is one of the largest departments at UNIFI facing all the academic and research activities in the field of Mechanical and Energy Engineering. The Heat Transfer and Combustion Group (HTC-Group) is a research unit part of the DIEF. HTC Group is led by Prof. Bruno Facchini and Prof. Antonio Andreini. Research activities in the field of turbomachinery heat transfer and combustion are carried out by experimental and numerical investigations.

Karlsruhe institute of Technology – KIT Institute of Thermal Turbmachinery - ITS
KIT is a higher education and research organisation with about 9.300 employees, 25.000 students, and a total annual budget of about 860 million Euro. It was funded in 2009 by merging of the University of Karlsruhe and the Research Centre of Karlsruhe. KIT combines the missions of a University of the state of Baden-Wuerttemberg and of a large-scale research institution of the Helmholtz Association. Within these missions, KIT is operating along the three strategic fields of action of research, teaching, and innovation.
The Institute of Thermal Turbomachinery is one of the bigger institutes within the department of mechanical engineering of the KIT. The research of the ITS is mainly focused on the hot gas section of gas turbines, i.e. combustor and high-pressure turbine, with particular emphasis on combustion and turbine blade cooling. But the transmission flow system is also part of the research activities. ITS has more than 25 years of experience and an internationally highly recognized expertise in these fields. The major research topics related to combustion and two-phase flows are the analysis of reacting flows, combustion instabilities, investigation of liquid fuel nozzles, two-phase flow including atomization, spray combustion, combustion instabilities, heat transfer and pollutant formation.

University of Naples Federico II – UNINA
The University of Naples Federico II is one of the oldest and largest universities in the world with four schools, twenty-six departments, an academic staff of about 3,000 individuals, 163 degree courses, and about 100,000 students enrolled.
The Department of Chemical, Materials and Production Engineering (DICMAPI) is a leading educational and scientific center aiming at the development of world class teaching and research in chemical engineering, materials, production processes and industrial management. The DICMAPI is part of a vast network of national and international collaborations and offers professional skills in support of many national and international companies.
The Combustion Lab (today Fuoco e Fiamme Lab: Synthetic Fuels, Carbon Nanoparticles and Flame Technologies for Sustainability) was established since early sixties and its activities nowadays deal with the study of new energy conversion technologies for a decarbonized world through the development of high-efficiency, low-pollutant emission flame configurations, design of synthetic fuels and hydrogen production from fuel pyrolysis. Flame synthesis of nano-sized carbonaceous particles and carbon material recovery and valorization from process by-products are parallel and complementary fields of research of the group.

Imperial College is involved in FFLECS through the Department of Mechanical Engineering (one of the largest departments in mechanical engineering in the UK), and in particular the Thermofluids Division, which is leading research in the area of multi-physics and multi-phase flows. The Thermofluids Division has extensive laboratory and computational facilities. In FFLECS, IC will leverage their expertise in electromagnetic control of multi-phase flows to develop cutting-edge technologies for sustainable transportation.

The Engineering Department is the largest Department of the university and one of the leading centres of engineering in the world. The department's aim is to address the world's most pressing challenges with science and technology. To achieve this aim, the department collaborates with other disciplines, institutions, companies and entrepreneurs and adopts an integrated approach to research and teaching. The main site is situated at Trumpington Street, to the south of the city centre of Cambridge. The FFLECS project is performed in the Hopkinson Lab, in the Energy, Fluid Mechanics and Turbomachinery Division of the Engineering Department. The team has delivered the Lean Azimuthal Flame (LEAF) in a previous EU project (LEAFINNOX) and in FFLECS, the LEAF will be used for dual-fuel combustion, together with associated modelling through Large-Eddy Simulation and the Double-Conditioned Moment Closure turbulent combustion modelling approach.
